What we did in first period AP Econ today.

So as usual, Mr. Pelkey came about 10-15 minutes late to class. He set his coffee on the podium and then started lecturing about Hobbes, Leviathan,, and U.S. imperialism/hegemony. I was wondering what any of it had to do with economics, but I didn’t say anything because I assumed he would go on to talk about international trade or global monopolies or something of that sort.

Then about 20 minutes into his lecture, he stopped and stared blankly at one girl’s notes. Then he looked up and said, “What was I talking about?”. “U.S. imperialism,” the class dutifully reminded him. Then he suddenly remembered that this was AP Econ, not AP Gov. And we all groaned because we had to erase our notes or draw a line through them or just chuck them. So then he yelped, “I need to make copies!” and ran out of the classroom. And we wasted away another 15 minutes of class time while we waited for him to make copies. Then he came back and started talking about Martha Stewart’s unfortunate prison stay, and then we threw darts at the Wall Street Journal.

No joke.

This, my friends, is what we do in AP Economics class.

I talked to McMystery today. Not extensively though. Just the casual “Wow…we are doing nothing in this class” or “What’s the Stats homework?”. And when he started talking to Harry* (names changed for anonymity purposes), he was asked whether he would prefer going to Cal or UCLA. And he said “Cal because it has a better rep, but UCLA because of better girls.”

And then it began flowing into my brain. The perfect vision I had of McMystery. I was reminded that he was a brilliant genius and that he would be attending a really good college. And that I probably would be attending some never-heard-of college or De Anza. It’s complicated. It’s really complicated.

He’s not the same shy, forgiving, plain boy that I crushed on in sophomore year. He’s different now. And it’s not that he’s changed, because nobody really changes. He’s just grown and developed. He’s grown into an outgoing yet reserved, somewhat judgmental, older guy. He is now a Somebody. And I’ve faded away from the public eye so much that I’ve almost become a Nobody.

Currently reading: Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder. It is quite an interesting book. I like to read it in my spare time (which actually exists now). It, like the my TV shows, helps me escape the lameness of my own life.

I think I’ll get hooked onto Gossip Girl since I have nothing better to do.
